A perfect match - tomatoes growing in the garden, ripe and juicy, and just beside them their perfect match, basil. Picked minutes before breakfast it has to be a match made in heaven. We love this combination for breakfast. A couple of slices of whole grain bread, toasted until nice and crispy, then butter, thick slices of fresh tomato, topped with torn basil leaves, a sprinkle of sea salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper. What a start to the day. Tomatoes from the supermarket have nothing like the flavour of these beauties, and they don't have the gorgeous smell of home grown ones either.
My husband saved the seed from last year, dried them and planted the seeds in the spring. He told me he planted "about" 30 seeds, so when I counted 85 baby plants I wondered if he needed new glasses. There were plenty of plants to give away, and more than enough for us. It has to be one of the best things about growing your own food, making a dash to the vegetable garden in your dressing gown and picking tomatoes and basil for breakfast. It is very hard to beat. Best served warm, with an espresso and the newspaper.
