I heard about the artist Mark Rothko for the first time from our daughter. I could be wrong about the timing, but I think the Court Theatre had scheduled the play “Red” about Rothko and his work for the 2011 season, and because of the earthquake, and no theatre, they didn’t do it. She was captivated by the gradations of colour, especially his reds. She was asked recently if she could choose anything in the world to hang on her wall at home what would it be, and her choice was a Mark Rothko painting, (and one of my photos - sweet girl!).
The sign sits on the road outside The Princess Margaret Hospital in Christchurch, one of several similar signs at the various entrances giving directions to the departments. This one has a dark vertical line in the centre. While Rothko often placed his colours in a horizontal format, this is vertical. His colours, while graduated, were more abrupt than the reds in this, but it was his work that I thought of when I saw the sign. Inspiration comes from everywhere. I love that. And I love the boldness of Rothko's work too. Colour, just because it is colour, just for the pleasure of it.
